CRONE

A commissioned piece (a set of two with the Maiden), the Crone is the full embodiment of authentically coming into one’s self. Wrinkles and sagging skin show her journey, without masking; the pattern in her hair represents the flow, disruption, and changing paths of decisions in life, and the leaves and flowers are the core sweetness of connecting to nature. The antlers are a sign of growth, not just age; a wren perches atop representing a spiritual guide. The Crone’s expression is contemplative, fierce, and grounded. She is not afraid to show her true self, or to embrace what she has learned, looking to the Maiden.

Suzanne, who commissioned these pieces, wanted their appearance to convey what they were experiencing; she described their inner and outer lives to me, and I drew how I imagined them to look. Once the drawings were complete, I moved on to cutting them out of black paper. They are now mounted in separate oval frames, looking to each other for continued support, growth, and reflection.
