MAIDEN
A commissioned piece (a set of two with the Crone), the Maiden faces the Crone, but hides her face behind a mask of the wren. She stands stiffly and is attempting to make herself small, leaning into the confines that society has told her she must accept. The loosening of her hair and the shredding of her shawl give us a glimpse of the wildness of her inner world desiring to come forth.
Suzanne, who commissioned these pieces, wanted their appearance to convey what they were experiencing; she described their inner and outer lives to me, and I drew how I imagined them to look. Once the drawings were complete, I moved on to cutting them out of black paper. They are now mounted in separate oval frames, looking to each other for continued support, growth, and reflection.
